The 49ers announced that they waived three players on Tuesday. Cornerback Adonis Alexander, WR Matt Cole, and safety Chris Edwards.
Cole appeared in one game with San Francisco in 2020 after signing with the team on December 24, 2020. The 49ers signed Edwards on November 24, 2020. He was waived on December 1 and signed to the team’s practice squad the following day, where he spent the remainder of the season. Edwards was later signed to a Reserve/Future contract with the team on January 4, 2021. Alexander also signed Reserve/Future contract with the 49ers on January 4, 2021.
With three roster spots now open, those will likely be filled by the three of the four members the Niners signed as undrafted free agents. Here are San Francisco’s options:
- Louisiana Monroe TE Josh Pederson
- Ohio St. WLB Justin Hilliard
- UAB WR Austin Watkins
- Kansas LB Elijah Sullivan
I’d say Watkins is a safe bet to be signed to the active roster, as is Hilliard. With rookie minicamp starting during the second week of May, either Sullivan or Pederson would be the next man up. That is unless someone else stands out.
