During Tuesday’s podcast, Niner Nate and Leo Luna discussed who the most underrated 49er is. On Wednesday’s episode of the Shanaplan, we talked about who the most overrated 49er is.
This is all subjective, but it’s also about expectations. We also factored in how fans feel about these specific players compared to their actual output. It’s important to note that saying a player is overrated doesn’t mean you think he’s a “bum.” It means that you want more out of the said player.
Akash Anavarthan gave his assessment on the topic:
So I went with wide receiver Deebo Samuel, just because I think 49ers fans, especially, view him as sort of an elite 1B type of receiver. Do I think he’s a good player? Yes. Do I think he has all of the toughness in the world? Yes.
But, when he was drafted back in 2019, he was drafted ahead of A.J. Brown and DK Metcalf. A.J. Brown clearly took a major step this past season and established himself as one of the best receivers in the game, and Deebo Samuel kinda took a step back, in my opinion.
With just the injuries and how he managed his body in the offseason. I felt like he came into the season kinda one step behind those guys. I would say he is the most overrated guy on the team.
He cited Samuel’s usage and whether the 49ers are getting the most out of Deebo in his specific role.
