On Tuesday, the Rams waived return man Nsimba Webster. He wasn’t on the waiver wire long as the San Francisco 49ers claimed Webster Wednesday afternoon.
Webster, 25, averaged 7.4 yards per punt return last year on 25 returns. Webster was tenth in the NFL in punt return average, with his long being 34 yards. Webster also returned kicks for Los Angeles.
Rams fans were surprised by this move as Webster had flashes as an explosive returner, but he did make his fair share of mistakes.
The 49ers also signed third-round running back Trey Sermon to a four-year deal. Sermon, who will compete to start with Raheem Mostert, will have his rookie contract worth $4.87 million. That leaves Trey Lance and Ambry Thomas as the lone draft picks from 2021 to remain unsigned.
With the players scheduled to report to training camp next Tuesday, July 27, it’s safe to assume both Lance and Thomas will be under contract by then.
