I will say, as someone who has seen Shanahan throw live, this was the best throw of his life because his TD/INT ratio in practice is 2/54, roughly.
After leaving UCLA following the 1995 season, Donahue spent the remainder of his football career in the 49ers organization. He was their director of player personnel from 1999 to 2000 until serving as general manager from 2001 to 2005, becoming the successor to Bill Walsh.
The 49ers made the playoffs in Donahue’s first two seasons as general manager but struggled in the latter half of his tenure, failing to make the postseason in his final three years with the team.
Following his departure from the 49ers, Donahue worked in broadcasting for Fox and NFL Network.
The only answer is right tackle Mike McGlinchey.
2020 was abysmal for McGlinchey, yet the 49ers still had enough belief in his ability that they picked up his fifth-year option. Although, they kind of had to pick it up to avoid finding the answer at an offensive tackle position for the third consecutive offseason. McGlinchey needs a breakout season to bury the narrative of him being soft.
It wasn’t just the lapses and inconsistencies of his pass blocking that brought him to the forefront of criticism. It was his lashing out in press conferences and twitter that really painted him as a target. The criticism for his poor performances would have been just that, but once he started showing how mentally fragile he was — it was over.
Why Talanoa Hufanga struggles with 49ers
It’s one thing to generate turnovers and register blitzing sacks at the collegiate level and then flash those skills during padless practices.
It’ll be another when the pads come on and Hufanga is now chasing after first- and second-string pass-catchers and running backs.
Hufanga ran a 4.64 40-time during his pro day, which isn’t terrible for a strong safety-type player but not exactly exemplary either. And there were times during his tenure at USC where his play speed didn’t look quite up to the part either.
Free-agent addition Trent Sherfield, formerly a special-teams ace for the Cardinals, appears to have an inside track to earn at least one roster spot thanks to his $200,000 salary guarantee. But that can’t be counted as a certainty just yet — not with James, Mohamed Sanu, Travis Benjamin, undrafted rookie Austin Watkins Jr., River Cracraft, Kevin White, Bennie Fowler and Andy Jones all vying for roster spots.
In total, the 49ers have 13 receivers on the 90-man roster and they’ll have to trim that to six or seven before the regular season. With only two surefire standouts, expect some real jostling.
