Shanahan: Jimmy Garoppolo will play one series; Trey Lance the rest of the first half

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan joined KNBR Thursday morning to discuss playing time for Saturday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Shanahan said the starters (Jimmy Garoppolo) would play one series. Then, “once they’re out, I’m hoping Trey can finish out that first half. I’d be surprised if we play him in the third quarter.”

Hopefully, Trey Lance gets a few series with the first-team offensive line before they get pulled, before finishing the half behind the second-team offensive line.

On Thursday, offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel was asked what he’s expecting to see from Lance in his first preseason game:

“It’s much of the same, it sounds kind of annoying or redundant, but you just want to see players continue to learn from mistakes. And so you’re finding those mistakes and that’s why we’re not sweating it that much when they happen. It’s more about how you respond and how you apply specific coaching because there’s a lot going on. So, you want to see him go out there and operate. You want to see no procedural penalties, and you want to see him have success and failure and learn from both.”

Lance said he hasn’t played in front of fans since the 2019 National Championship game.

I’m also curious to see whether Shanahan leaves Jimmy G in the game if it’s a short series for him out of the gate. If you went back to the first preseason game in 2019, Garoppolo and the starters were on the field for 11 plays.

We won’t see Nick Bosa on Saturday. Shanahan said the team’s star edge rusher wouldn’t participate in the first or second preseason game. Instead, the plan is for Bosa to join team drills after the Chargers exhibition game.

I was hoping we’d see Bosa during joint practices next week against the Chargers, but this is about the big picture — which is making sure Bosa is ready to go by Week 1.

With Week 3 of the preseason serving as the dress rehearsal game, I wonder if the team will throw Bosa out there and let him get live reps against the Raiders. It’s tough to simulate getting a player into game shape.

Roster moves

The 49ers signed S Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and DL Eddie Vanderdoes, who the team worked out earlier this week. The corresponding moves were to place S Tony Jefferson (groin/hamstring) on Injured Reserve List and waive DL Davin Bellamy.

During Bellamy’s first day of practice, he jumped offsides on his first rep and then hit the QB on his second. Let’s see if Vanderdoes fares any better.
