49ers waive QB Josh Rosen; claim CB Davontae Harris off waivers from the Ravens

Harris, 26, appeared in four games with the Ravens last season and seven with the Broncos.

The Josh Rosen experiment has officially come to an end. Per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the 49ers have released the former first-round QB.

To put it kindly, Rosen did not have the greatest camp. Too often, he put the ball in harm's way. Unfortunately, that was no different against the Chiefs in the preseason, and it became evident that Rosen wasn’t the QB3 the 49ers have been searching for.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said the plan for next Sunday’s game against the Chargers is for Nate Sudfeld to receive all of the playing time after Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance.

Per Chris Biderman of the Sacramento Bee, neither Rosen nor Sudfeld received a rep during team drills on Monday or Tuesday. With a roster that has depth issues at offensive line, cornerback, and has a banged-up defensive line, it’s difficult to justify keeping three QBs.

Sudfeld hasn’t exactly lit it up in practice, but he’ll receive one final chance during the next preseason game against the Chargers. If Sudfeld fails to impress, I’d expect the 49ers to keep two quarterbacks.

With Emmanuel Moseley nursing a hamstring strain, the 49ers need a cornerback with NFL experience. So on Tuesday, San Francisco claimed cornerback Davontae Harris off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

When in doubt, take the players from the best-run organization in football.

Harris played 112 snaps last season for Baltimore between special teams and defense. He finished with ten tackles, and one pass defended.

During his career, Harris has played 520 defensive snaps. He’s played for the Bengals, Broncos, where most of his playing time came during the 2019 season, and most recently with Baltimore.

The 49ers don’t have to make an additional transaction for Harris to get below 85 players because they waived Rosen.
