49ers injury updates: Shanahan is hopeful Jalen Hurd can practice next week

Trent Williams should return next week, too.

The 49ers are Chargers finished up their first of two practices. There were no fights or skirmishes, which is rare in today’s age. There was plenty of trash talk, though. But, the energy was the best since training camp started, which is what happens when you get to go against a player in a different jersey.

The closest thing there was to a fight today? Chargers linebacker Kyzir White against......Kyle Shanan? White took the running backs to the ground, and Shanahan wasn’t too happy about that. So, the 49ers head coach walked into the Chargers huddle and politely told White that nobody is going to the ground during practice.

At the end of the first team drill, it seemed as if the players would get into it. Trent Williams walked over and asked White, “what are you so mad at?” The next play, Raheem Mostert broke for a big run, and Williams started jawing to the Chargers sideline.

None of this happens when the 49ers practice against each other.

Speaking of offensive tackles, Joe Staley was on hand:

Staley lives in the area and is here to work with the staff, get a feel for how things work. “He was so amped up, he was kind of annoying us all day,” Shanahan said, laughing. Let’s call this a trial run for (coach) Staley.

As for the players who sat out of practice:

  • WR Jalen Hurd (knee)
  • DT Javon Kinlaw (knee)
  • RB Elijah Mitchell (abductor)
  • OL Trent Williams (knee)
  • OT Shon Coleman (knee)
  • RG Aaron Banks (shoulder)
  • CB Emmanuel Moseley (hamstring strain)

The plan for Hurd is to shut him down for the week and hopefully return next week for the preseason finale against the Raiders. According to Kyle Shanahan, Hurd is dealing with knee tendinitis, who said the injury is related to Hurd’s ACL tear.

Shanahan said Hurd is on a program where he is taking seven days off, and the team hopes he’ll feel better come the preseason finale.

Williams sat out with knee swelling. Shanahan said he got it drained and will take this week off. The 49ers expect Williams back next week against the Raiders, which is great news for the 49ers. Williams did not have any noticeable limp.

Banks has a minor AC sprain. Shanahan was adamant about not being a doctor. He called Banks’ injury a “shoulder something.” Shanahan said he only asks how long the players will miss. He expects Banks to be out another 1-2 weeks.

Shanahan said he “definitely wants to” keep three quarterbacks, but injuries make it difficult. Nate Sudfeld did not have a rep during team drills on Thursday.

I watched the offense today, and Jordan Elliott had the defense. We’ll be back soon with breakdowns of each side of the ball.
