49ers CB Jason Verrett walks off the field emotional with an apparent knee injury

The 49ers top corner appeared to suffer a serious injury in their first game of the season.

The 49ers played the majority of their Week 1 matchup against the Detroit Lions without their top running back after Raheem Mostert was forced to leave with a knee injury. However, with the result of the game already decided in the fourth quarter, 49ers cornerback Jason Verrett fell to the turf and immediately grabbed his right knee. As a result, he was ruled out with a knee injury.

Verrett was able to walk to the sideline under his own power but quickly sat on the bench and put a towel over his head. After a couple of minutes, he began walking to the locker room and required assistance before he could get into the tunnel. Verrett was clearly upset, and given his long injury history, there’s an obvious reason for concern about the Niners' top coverage corner.

The 49ers' defensive backfield is already one of the thinnest position groups on the roster and can ill afford to handle any losses. In addition, defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans was already without one starting corner, with Emmanuel Moseley out, and now could be without his best cornerback going forward.
