Thanks for bearing with me the last couple of days while my computer took a vacation. We are off today. Enjoy the long weekend as this will be the last time for a long time where we have a Sunday without football.

The 49ers also released LB Mychal Kendricks off the injured reserve.

What to make of the Wayne Gallman signing, Qadree Ollison cut

The Falcons are bringing Wayne Gallman Jr. from the outside, signing him to the 53-man roster on Thursday, at the expense of someone who has been around a little while.

Gallman has a week-plus to learn the offense and prepare for carries in the regular-season opener against Philadelphia on Sept. 12. Davis will take most of the carries, but there’s an opportunity to earn a role in the Falcons backfield.

Aiyuk, Sanu in line as 49ers’ punt return options on roster

Veteran wide receiver Mohamed Sanu said he is comfortable lining up deep to return punts.

“I’ve done it pretty much all my life, honestly,” he said on Thursday. “(I) started in little league, high school, college. Done it in the league. Always caught punts, so it’s always been something I’ve done.”

“Usually, you want one of your receivers or corners to do it,” Shanahan said. “That’s kind of how it’s been everywhere I’ve ever been. You need one of those guys to make it. If a guy’s on there just for return status, it ends up costing your team. And I do think we have other guys on our team who can do it.”

The Choice: Trey Lance’s ‘no-brainer’ fight vs. racial inequality

“Obviously, I grew up differently than 90 percent of the people that I was around,” Trey said. “Me and my brother just grew up differently. Our household was different, and I knew that obviously from an early age. I can see that my skin color is different than everyone else’s.”

“I think I thought about it, but it was just something that I got used to at such an early age that it wasn’t ever anything that I didn’t feel I can’t handle.”

Jets working out Reuben Foster after checkered NFL exit

The Jets’ search for defensive help brought them to a talent from Robert Saleh’s past and a talent whose past has kept him away from the football field in recent years.

The Jets were set to work out Reuben Foster on Thursday, a player who could help a linebacker corps that right now likely would have two rookie starters.

But there are reasons other teams have not offered the 27-year-old Foster, who has not played a snap since 2018, another chance.

Kyle Shanahan: I don’t need to announce the 49ers’ starting quarterback, you can figure it out

Shanahan told reporters that he doesn’t need to make any announcements about starters at quarterback or any other position.

“I don’t need to announce the quarterback, I don’t think I need to announce the starting punt returner, either, but I bet you guys can figure it out,” Shanahan said.

Jimmy Garoppolo started in the preseason and got most of the work with the first-string offense in training camp, so Garoppolo would appear to be the starter when the 49ers open their season against the Lions. Shanahan indicated that he might use both Garoppolo and Trey Lance, although Lance is recovering from a finger injury that could affect his status for Week One.

San Francisco 49ers: 4 bold predictions for the 2021 NFL season

The San Francisco 49ers will be a defensive juggernaut once again in 2021

Due to a number of injuries to their defensive line and secondary, the Niners were limited to how effective they could be on defense last season. With Nick Bosa and Dee Ford set to back at full strength next season, this will definitely provide the Niners with a huge boost on their defensive front and give a ton of relief to Fred Warner who was their defensive anchor for the entirety of the 2020-21 NFL season.
