On Tuesday, the 49ers' weekly press conference schedule became a point of interest when the team announced that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo would speak to the media on Wednesday. While a press availability schedule wouldn’t normally garner much attention, the NFL asks teams to make their starting quarterbacks available for the media on Wednesdays of game weeks. As a result, Trey Lance is not scheduled to speak to the press this week.
While any speculation about the 49ers' Week 1 starting quarterback seems silly at this point, head coach Kyle Shanahan has yet to make any official announcement confirming Garoppolo will be under center in Sunday’s matchup against the Detroit Lions. Throughout the offseason, the organization has remained steadfast that they were comfortable letting Garoppolo remain atop the depth chart even after trading three first-round picks to move up in this year’s draft to select Lance.
Shanahan kept the door open for Lance to be the 49ers' Week 1 starter, but an inconsistent preseason and an injured finger likely eliminated the rookie’s chances of starting the team’s first game of the regular season. However, assuming Lance is healthy enough to play against Detroit, he will likely see the field on a handful of snaps, hoping to earn more playing time going forward.
