When the 49ers play the Lions five days from now, where will they have the biggest advantage? Leo Luna and Javier Vega spent a good chunk of today’s Oh, Hey There Podcast looking ahead to the game and seeing advantages for the 49ers in many areas.
“Just run the ball 40 times, and you’ll be fine,” Vega said, “There’s a huge talent gap between those two teams. Then you have the head coach battle. Would you rather have Kyle Shanahan, or would you rather have Dan Campbell?”
Kyle Shanahan doesn’t have the most impressive coaching resume on wins and losses alone, but he certainly had the edge over Dan Campbell. Right now, the only experience Campbell has is a 12 game stint as the interim head coach for the Dolphins after Joe Philbin was fired in 2015 (he went 5-7).
Leo thinks the 49ers could take advantage of a rookie on the Lions’ offensive line. “I was looking at what Penei Sewell has done this preseason. He had a total of 37 pass-blocking snaps played. He allowed four pressures in 37 snaps...Imagine what 49ers Twitter would do if Mike McGlinchey allowed 4 pressures in 37 snaps?! [Sewell] struggled this preseason, and he’s arguably going to go against a top-five defensive line in the NFL.”
Things haven’t gone great for Sewell so far, to put it mildly. Pro Football Focus gave him a 27 pass-blocking grade (dead last among 47 right tackles with at least 50 offensive snaps this preseason) and 46.5 run-blocking grade.
Enjoy having to face Nick Bosa, Dee Ford, Samson Ebukam, and more in your first game as a professional kid.
