49ers become the first team in the NFL to clinch a playoff berth

It took a Tommy DeVito performance of a lifetime, but the Niners will take it

The odds were against the San Francisco 49ers to clinch a playoff berth on Monday night. They needed a 4-8 New York Giants team to upset a Green Bay Packers team that came into the evening on a three-game winning streak and favored by nearly a touchdown.

But that’s why we play the games. You never know what’s going to happen or how they’ll play out. The Giants won the turnover battle, and got a tremendous effort from a quarterback who, respectfully, has no business playing in the NFL. But Tommy DeVito looked the part on Monday night and the Giants needed all 71 of his rushing yards.

The 49ers were always going to make the playoffs. Kyle Shanahan has now led his team to the postseason in four of the previous five seasons. Unlike in year’s past, and more so than in 2019, this feels like the year that the Niners will hoist a Lombardi tropy.
