Punterville State of the Punter: Wishnowsky comfortably leading in punter stats

That fourth round reach a few years back is now turning into a helluva pick

Mayor of Punterville here.

Citizens, we have not given a state of the punting union in some time, but that changes today. Today, we talk punters. Today we look at the receipts made on our hero Mitch Wishnowsky. With Wishnowsky now at the top in some categories, it’s time for those who doubted him to see his greatness.

You might remember a certain NFL draft where the 49ers burned a fourth rounder for a punter. They took the punter in the fourth round (110th overall) which led many to say “that’s way too high to take a punter.”

Yes, it is too high. Unless that punter is Mitch Wishnowsky. Then it’s a steal. It’s a question of “Why did he fall so far?”

Wishnowsky has had the time now to turn into a pretty good draft pick from what was a strange move. A strange move for a punter is moving Andy Lee to the Cleveland Browns to draft Bradley Pinion in the fifth. But now, we think not of Pinion or Lee, just Wishnowsky.

Oh and the fact he did this against the Seattle Seahawks:

Notice I’m only showing one video. It’d be too easy to show all the videos where he’s pinned them in their own redzone.

So how good is Wishnowsky? Well, 30.6 percent of his punts have been into the opponents 10-yard line and 13.9 percent are inside the 5-yard line. That’s at the top. As ESPN’s Nick Wagoner points out, the second place punter is at 23.3 percent and 8.7 percent respectively.

That could get Wishnowsky into a Pro Bowl this year, but even if that’s impressive there’s still something from his college tape he has yet to display: his running. We just need to see the 49ers run him around like he did at Utah for a fake. Then again his punts are resulting in points for the 49ers so that might not happen anytime soon.

In any case, while we can come up with another lame excuse as to why Brock Purdy isn’t any good, there’s no dismissing the awesomeness that is Mitch Wishnowsky. Citizens, tell me the state of Punterville:
