Golden Nuggets: We’re so far into the season that we’re back in preseason

Your daily San Francisco 49ers news for Thursday, January 4th, 2024

Who’s ruled out for 49ers-Rams, and how SF may handle stake-less game

“This is effectively a preseason game, and it’s almost like a roster cutdown situation. The 49ers just need enough bodies to get through the game, and while they’re stressing the importance of treating this practice week seriously, there are certain players who simply shouldn’t play Sunday.

It seems a bit like Shanahan is trying to keep that vague to ensure that those high-value players keep the energy and intent high this week in practice. The reality is that they may be told they’re not playing just before the game, or late in the week.

He laughed when asked if Trent Williams (who was not seen in the locker room or practice field Wednesday) could use the week off, before putting a serious face back on. It seems far-fetched that he would play.”

Purdy becomes 49ers’ first Pro Bowl QB in over two decades

“Purdy is the first 49ers quarterback since Jeff Garcia in 2002 to be named to the Pro Bowl. Last week, Purdy broke Garcia’s single-season record for passing yards and finishes his first full season as the starter with 4,280 yards passing.

Ward, a sixth-year professional, also was chosen to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career. He fully emerged as the 49ers’ lockdown cornerback and registered a career-best five interceptions in 2023. He also leads the NFL with 23 passes broken up.

McCaffrey, named to his third Pro Bowl and first with the 49ers, will finish the season as the top rusher in the NFL with 1,459 yards on the ground. McCaffrey also added 67 receptions for 564 yards and scored a total of 21 touchdowns (14 rushing, seven receiving).”

Kyle Shanahan: “I don’t think it’s good for anybody to take two weeks off”

“Brock, we’re treating this as a normal week,” Shanahan said. “So this is a normal Wednesday at this time of year, which means we go half-speed on everything. We don’t do anything full-speed this time of year on a Wednesday. Brock will get half of the reps with the ones. Sam will get the other. I want our team to treat this week as Brock going down on like the first play of the game. Now, that’s why I want them both repping it. I want Brock to get some work this week. That’s something I’d like us to be ready for if that unfortunately did happen. Thursday when it’s all full-speed, probably give Sam majority of them. We’ll talk about that after today. Friday, we’re back to walk-through.”

49ers’ Brock Purdy to sit out vs. Rams. How many starters will be benched? (paywall)

“Still, Los Angeles won’t play quarterback Matthew Stafford, wide receiver Cooper Kupp, defensive tackle Aaron Donald, running back Kyren Williams and linebacker Ernest Jones. Quarterback Carson Wentz will start against the 49ers, whose players, with the exception of Purdy, are being told to prepare diligently because they could play.

“I think an off week helps a lot of people, especially if you handle it the right way,” Shanahan said. “This time of year, it allows guys to get a little fresher. What you don’t want is two off weeks. No one gets two bye weeks. And we earned ours next week.”
