San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said he wants a veteran cornerback on the roster now that Jason Verrett was lost for the year after suffering a season-ending shoulder injury last Thursday during practice.
When cornerback Ambry Thomas came off the field in Week 17, he walked straight to Verrett on multiple occasions, asking for Verrett’s advice. So, it’s unsurprising that Shanahan wants to add experience at cornerback.
Aaron Wilson reported that the 49ers are working out veteran cornerback Casey Hayward. Hayward last played for the Atlanta Falcons for the first six games of the 2022 regular season. He started and was targeted 27 times, only allowing 15 receptions.
Hayward was having a solid season before it was cut short due to a right shoulder injury that he suffered against the Niners, coincidentally enough. Hayward is 34 and remained unsigned all season. The 49ers will likely add him to the practice squad if he shows enough long speed and athleticism.
The 49ers have seemingly gone the veteran route every year at cornerback around this time. From Janoris Jenkins, Josh Norman, Dre Kirkpatrick, and Darqueze Dennard, Hayward fits the mold.
