2008 Mock Draft Database
Site 1st Rnd Pick Pos. Ht. Wt. College Pick Assessment
Football Jabber - (Updated 3/26) Early Doucet WR 6-0 207 LSU Their Take - "Joining Bryant Johnson, Isaac Bruce and Arnaz Battle in version 3 of the Greatest Show on Turf, Doucet is a necessity in an offense that will frequently run 3 and 4 WR sets. With Darrel Jackson finished and Ashley Lelie halfway out the door, the 49ers might choose to draft another WR now to expose him to the system before the ageless Isaac Bruce finally calls it a career."
CBS Sportsline - Pete Prisco - (Updated 3/13) Early Doucet WR 6-0 207 LSU Their Take - "They have done little to help the outside passing game in free agency, which means it should be a focus on draft day. Doucet would be a nice addition for whomever plays quarterback."
Pro Football Weekly - (Updated 3/15) Devin Thomas WR 6-2 218 Michigan St. Their Take - "The Niners are devoid of playmakers and need to give fourth-year quarterback Alex Smith more weapons. Thomas could be used in many ways like a running back in Mike Martz’s offense."
Fox Sports - Chris Steuber - (Updated 2/11) Early Doucet WR 6-0 207 LSU Their Take -- "The Niners have to add playmakers on offense to have any chance at winning. They hired Mike Martz as their offensive coordinator to give the offense a fresh look. Martz loves wide receivers, and with Alex Smith in place as the team's QB, drafting LSU's Early Doucet gives Smith a true weapon."
The Z Report - (Updated 1/1) Dan Connor OLB 6-3 233 Penn State Their Take - "He is the perfect guy to stick next to Patrick Willis for the next 10 years. The Niners get much better on defense with this pick."
College Football News - (Updated 2/15) Mario Mannigham WR 6-0 178 Michigan Their Take -- "Darrell Jackson is a bust and Arnaz Battle isn't anything special. The Niners have to give Alex Smith more weapons to work with."
Football Thoughts - (Updated 4/6) Quentin Groves OLB 6-3 254 Auburn Their Take -- "The 49ers spent millions of dollars last off-season on their secondary, and for what? It doesn't due any good if you have no pressure up front, or can't stop the run for that matter. What would really help would be a young star to come in and supply pressure on the quarterback to help that secondary. Justin Smith was brought in at end, and Manny Lawson will be returning from an injury, but with the addtion of Groves San Francisco may realisticly have a respectable and fearsome pass rush on defense."
The Hazean - (Updated 3/18) James Hardy WR 6-6 220 Indiana Their Take -- "The 49ers need to address the wide receiving corps via the draft. Enter Hardy, a tall, fast receiver from Indiana. Mike Martz has a history of finding and developing talent at the wide receiver position (Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce, Kevin Curtis, Shaun McDonald) which should benefit both Hardy and the 49ers’ offense."
D&J Mock Draft - (Updated 4/1) Malcolm Kelly WR 6-4 217 Oklahoma NES Take -- "Kelly is one of the better receiving prospects this year, but he’s not really an elite talent. He’s a tough player with excellent body control and hands. However, his athleticism and route-running ability is average. While he may not improve in areas like his speed, if Kelly improves as a route runner he could become a good starter at the next level. He made a wise choice coming out a year early as his ability has likely reached its peak at the collegiate level. Named a two-time All Big 12 Second Team player."
NFL Draft Prospects - (Updated 4/7) Gosder Cherilus OT 6-7 318 Boston College NES Take -- "Prior to his senior season, many considered Cherilus a top 20 first round selection. After starting his first three years at Boston College on the right side of the line before transitioning to left tackle for his senior season. On the left, Cherilus struggled against speed rushers and was often flagged for holding penalties. In the pros, he’s clearly a right tackle. He’s incredibly powerful and can single handedly take on the most powerful of opponents. Scarily, he can get even bigger and stronger. Footwork can get sloppy, but there is a lot to work with. With good coaching, Cherilus could become a Pro Bowl tackle."
