49ers-Falcons injury report: Running backs sitting, special teamers out

The San Francisco 49ers and Atlanta Falcons released their first practice participation reports of the week, and the 49ers have quite the list. We learned earlier today that Kenneth Acker has been placed in the concussion protocol, so he is out of practice for now. If he improves to limited between now and Friday, that would bode well for his chances of playing on Sunday. Keith Reaser is competing with Dontae Johnson for the starting spot opposite Tramaine Brock, but he was absent Wednesday due to a family matter.

L.J. McCray is out after having arthroscopic surgery on his knee. He could return this season, but with this many injuries, the 49ers might decide they need the extra roster spot. In the meantime, the special teams takes a hit as McCray was one of the top special teamers.

Mike Davis and Carlos Hyde both sat out practice. Davis had surgery on a hand fracture on Tuesday, and his status moving forward is up in the air. Hyde's foot remains day-to-day according to Jim Tomsula. My guess is he does not play this weekend given that he was inactive last week and the team has their bye next week. It would be foolish to play him. That would leave the team with Kendall Gaskins, Pierre Thomas, and Shaun Draughn as their running backs this weekend. How do you see the touches split between the three of them?

It would be foolish to start Hyde

So my guess is he starts!

hopefully thomas and gaskins

mostly thomas

Don't play anyone who's actually hurt

If they’re banged up, get them out there. And do not, under any circumstances, start an actually very talented player with an injury(that means you, Hyde). This season is lost. Don’t kill the next season alongside it.

That's what make Tomsula dangerous though, he done ran Hyde into the ground because he's desperate for a win.

I don't think a stress fracture in your foot equates to being run to much.

Hyde is a violent runner. Reggie Bush was the wrong choice to be his primary backup, and a R4 draft choice can only be expected to participate so much as a rookie. Would have been nice to have had a more durable FA backing up Hyde from the beginning.

all it takes is someone stepping on your foot at the wrong angle

or with sufficient force.

Playing him with the fracture could be "running him into the ground" though.

It would be...

..but I don’t think they’re going to do that.

Hyde has averaged less than 17 rushing attempts per game

I don’t think that qualifies as being "run into the ground".

Most NFL players are "banged up" at this point in the season.

If they’re full participation they’ll definitely play. Limited participation they’ll probably play.

If

He can play he needs to play. Obviously the doctors will know whether or not it can be made worse but the team needs something positive to build off of next season even if this one is lost. Hyde needs to prove that he can handle being the bell cow like Gore did.

Hyde can prove he's the bell cow

He shouldn’t do it on a fractured foot, though.

Doesn't smell like wins

More like an Italian dinner.

That's this season's latest new fragrance by Tomsula: "Defeat"

The Rams

that is all.

I thought Hyde was done for a while

And JT was acting like he is day to day.

Here's how I see the play calling since Kaepernick obviously can't get it done.

1st down hand off to Gaskins
2nd down hand off the Thomas
3rd down hand off to Draughn
4th down punt

next series
1st down hand off to Thomas
2nd down hand off to Draughn
3rd down hand off to Gaskins
4th down punt

That’ll show Kaepernick how to play QB!

I remember everyone was so happy in training camp

and they said that the new coach was not driving them to the ground like the previous one.
Everyone including the players said they would be fresh and healthy this season.
I know injuries happen for different reasons but I can’t stop thinking about what was said earlier.

I just read about the surgery McCray had today for his torn meniscus in his knee

I’m sad. One of the few that hustled every time he was on the field.

Got what you wanted Jed?

Maybe not. But you DAMN sure got what your deserved!!!

We ARE the worst team in the NFL now.

I make $110 an hour from home using my computer!!

Nah… not really. It turned out to be a scam.
