The 49ers almost sprung the upset in Week 2. We break down some things we learned.

The San Francisco 49ers lost a tough one to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2, losing 12-9 at CenturyLink Field. The 49ers held a lead in the fourth quarter, but the defense was worn down and Russell Wilson was able to take advantage. His scrambling and touchdown pass to Paul Richardson proved the difference.

1. Carlos Hyde remains a heck of a runner

The 49ers only consistent offense came from Hyde. He rushed for 102 yards in the first half, and 124 for the game. It was disappointing he did not get more work, but it was a strong game nonetheless. For the time being, he will remain the most important player in this offense.

2. Brian Hoyer is most certainly not the quarterback of the future

Hoyer lost a huge potential fourth quarter play to a Marquise Goodwin drop, but it was a struggle for him. He did not get consistent time in the pocket, but when he did, he took too much time to throw. He made a horrid decision on the Bobby Wagner interception, and generally struggled. After the game, Kyle Shanahan put the loss on the passing game, and while it was a blunt assessment, it was factual.

3. Aaron Lynch is kind of valuable as a pass rusher

The 49ers activated Lynch, and he stepped up with the first sack of the game. In fact, it was the 49ers first sack of the season. The pass rush was much improved, and Lynch was a big reason for it. It will be interesting to see how he and Xavier Cooper alternate activations depending on the offensive line and passing vs. rushing attack of the opposing team.

4. The 49ers defense could turn into a really good unit sooner rather than later

The 49ers defense bent but didn’t broke for most of the game. They broke at the worst possible time, but that was due in part to how much work they had to put in for the first three and a half quarters. The 49ers held the Seahawks to 3.5 yards per rush, and only 3.9 total yards per play. They benefited from facing a bad Seahawks offensive line, but it was a strong effort nonetheless.

5. The 49ers struggle on third down

The 49ers offense was 2-of-12 on third downs. Convert a couple more of those, and they very well might have won this game. The defense settled down, but during the Seahawks opening drive, they struggled to close the deal. The Seahawks converted to third downs and a fourth down before eventually settling for a field goal. That drive certainly didn’t end the game, but a potential six or nine play drive turned into a 16-play drive. Seattle had four drives of double digit plays. As the 49ers defense continues to improve, they’ll cut down the amount of time they spend on the field.

The 49ers gave the Seahawks a lot, but it was not enough in the Pacific Northwest.

The San Francisco 49ers went north to face the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2, and a strong effort was for naught, as the 49ers lost by a final score of 12-9. The 49ers kept the game close to the end, but could not quite overcome Russell Wilson’s lone touchdown drive.

The two teams exchanged field goals into the fourth quarter, with the 49ers actually taking a 9-6 lead early in the final frame. The 49ers defensive front was dominant for much of the game, but spending a ridiculous amount of time on the field wore them down. The 49ers had a lot of bend but don’t break, and while it kept the Seahawks out of the end zone for most of the game, it still tired out the 49ers. And Russell Wilson had just enough magic midway through the fourth quarter to get the go-ahead score on a ridiculous maneuver and throw.

The 49ers laid an egg in the season-opener, but we saw a much improved effort in several areas. On the defensive side of the ball, the pass rush took a huge step forward. The Seahawks offensive line was a big help, but much credit to the 49ers for executing against a bad line. Aaron Lynch got the first sack for the 49ers, and Tank Carradine and Arik Armstead added sacks of their own. Russell Wilson had plays where he had too much time, but overall the 49ers did a good job getting pressure.

The run game showed improvement as well. Carlos Hyde rushed for 102 yards in the first half, and finished with 124 yards. He only had seven carries in the first half, but he was a regular target in the passing game. We saw it in Week 1, and again in Week 2, just with a whole lot more yards on the ground.

The other big improvement on offense was in terms of penalties. The 49ers only had two penalties in the first half, and generally did a good job avoiding those particular kinds of stupid mistakes that cost them in Seattle. It was not a perfect performance in that regard, but it was improved.

However, the offense remains a problem. Hyde had a big first half, but overall the offense struggled again with consistency. Once again, it was a mix of poor offensive line play, some questionable play-calling, some bad drops by pass catchers, and some poor play by Brian Hoyer. The 49ers made too many mistakes in execution when they are simply not good enough to overcome too many mistakes.

Up next - Thursday Night Football vs. Los Angeles Rams

There is no rest for the weary as the 49ers will host the Rams this Thursday on national TV. The Rams blew out the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1, and are in a tight one with Washington in Week 2, tied 20-20 late in the fourth quarter.

The 49ers strong safety is questionable to return.

Fooch’s update: Eric Reid returned to the game on the 49ers first defensive snap of the third quarter.

The San Francisco 49ers took a tough blow on Sunday. Strong safety Eric Reid suffered a knee injury and had to leave the game in the second quarter. Reid is listed as questionable to return. In his absence, Jaquiski Tartt moved over to strong safety, and Jimmie Ward came on at free safety.

Ward is active for the first time this season, and was coming off the bench in the first half as a sub-package option. Tartt has made two consecutive starts at free safety, but will eventually be replaced in the starting lineup once Ward is ready to go back to being a full-time starter.

Reid’s loss is a tough one for the 49ers, as he had taken quite well to the strong safety role in this new-look defense. He was able to walk off under his own power, so we’ll see if he is able to return to this game.

Big changes in store for Week 2!

The San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks kick off in just under 90 minutes, which means inactives are official. The big news is that offensive guard Laken Tomlinson is active and will start at left guard in place of Zane Beadles. The 49ers acquired Tomlinson on August 31 after it became clear Joshua Garnett was going to miss extended time. Tomlinson was inactive in Week 1, but has been working his toward a starting job.

Also noteworthy is that Jimmie Ward and Aaron Lynch are active. Ward’s presence has Jerome inactive. The 49ers wrote in Jerome’s name, while the rest are typed, suggesting this truly was a pre-game decision. Meanwhile, Lynch will be active over Xavier Cooper, as the 49ers look to boost their pass rush.

Fooch’s update: Jimmie Ward listed as starter.

Finally, Victor Bolden is active over Kendrick Bourne. While Bourne was contributing across special teams, Bolden might get a shot at returning some kicks and/or punts this week.
