He was a key part of a strong first half of defense.

There were not many positives to take away from the San Francisco 49ers 33-10 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, but a recent addition deserves some recognition. Defensive lineman Leger Douzable had five tackles, two sacks, a pass deflection, and two quarterback hits in Week 8.

The 49ers got some good work from several players on defense, but Douzable deserves a plug given how recently he re-joined the team. The 49ers originally signed Douzable to the roster midway through the preseason. He got some work in the 49ers final three preseason games, but was part of the team’s roster cuts after their final preseason game. Injuries mounted however, and 12 days ago, the 49ers signed Douzable when they placed Arik Armstead on injured reserve.

Douzable stepped in last week, but took a solid step forward this week. Douzable has bounced around the NFL since 2008, and since then had 6.5 sacks and two passes defended in his career. Suffice to say, Sunday was an unexpected and welcome performance.

Solomon Thomas is potentially dealing with an MCL sprain. If that bears out with Thomas’ Monday MRI, Douzable and Tony McDaniel will continue to get plenty of work. They were among the 49ers top five graded players, according to Pro Football Focus’s quick post-game look. I don’t expect two sacks and a pass deflection every week, but the 49ers have found a gem in a trying time for the defensive line.

The 49ers defensive line depth continues to take hits.

The San Francisco 49ers injury report following Week 8 is pretty ridiculous at this point. We already know that free safety Jimmie Ward has a fractured forearm, and left tackle Joe Staley is getting an x-ray on his eye to check if he fractured his orbital bone. Now we learn that defensive tackle Solomon Thomas will likely miss some time. NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco reported on Sunday that Thomas might have an MCL sprain.

Thomas and the 49ers return to the Bay Area Sunday evening, and Thomas will get an MRI on his knee Monday morning. That will determine the extent of the injury, and provide some kind of timeline to the 49ers.

If Thomas sprained his MCL, he could be looking at anywhere from a two-to-six week absence. An MCL sprain is simply another version of an MCL tear — it’s simply a partial tear compared to a full tear of the ligament. Either way, Thomas would miss at least a little bit of time with the injury.

Any kind of absence would leave the 49ers that much more limited along the line. Arik Armstead is done for the year, and Aaron Lynch is week-to-week with a calf injury. Losing Thomas means we’ll see plenty more of Leger Douzable, Tony McDaniel, and Datone Jones. And with D.J. Jones dealing with some kind of knee injury as well, it’s a good bet the 49ers sign at least one defensive lineman this week.

The 49ers will have to make some changes to their secondary, once again.

The San Francisco 49ers lost Jimmie Ward to a forearm injury in Week 8, and after the game, Kyle Shanahan said the x-ray showed a fractured forearm. Shanahan did not have specifics on the bone fractured or a timeline, but knew it was some kind of fracture.

Rookie safety Adrian Colbert took Ward’s place after the injury. Colbert might continue in the role, but I am curious to see if something happens with Eric Reid. The 49ers moved Reid to linebacker, and needed him there with Reuben Foster inactive due to his rib injury. If Foster returns next week, do the 49ers potentially move Jaquiski Tartt to free safety and Reid to strong safety? Or so they stick with Colbert and Tartt?

The 49ers return to Santa Clara tonight, and Kyle Shanahan will be back to meet the media Monday afternoon. He’ll likely be able to provide a better timeline then. I imagine four-to-six weeks would be on the optimistic side, but we don’t know the specifics of the fracture yet. We’ll find out more in the next day or two.

The 49ers lost to the Eagles on Sunday, and dropped to a franchise-worst start.

The San Francisco 49ers search for win No. 1 will continue on into Week 9. The 49ers were thumped by the Philadelphia Eagles, losing by a final score of 33-10. The 49ers drop to 0-8 with the loss, marking the first time they have been 0-8 in franchise history.

The big storyline in the loss was the injury report. The 49ers came into the game with Trent Brown, Reuben Foster, and Aaron Lynch among the inactives. By the end of the game, they had lost left tackle Joe Staley, right tackle Garry Gilliam, safety Jimmie Ward, defensive lineman Solomon Thomas, and defensive tackle D.J. Jones to injury. That’s four starters and a rotational backup lost in the same game.

By the end of the game, the 49ers offensive line included Zane Beadles and Erik Magnuson at the two tackle positions. Beadles is the primary reserve interior lineman, and Magnuson was another reserve interior lineman.

It should be no surprise that things went south in a hurry. C.J. Beathard had some trouble with his accuracy, particularly to Carlos Hyde on shorter passes. But he also had no chance for much of the day, as the line folded to pressure throughout the game. He was sacked four times, and it’s hard to find many instances where he was not under pressure. He finished the game 17 of 36 for 167 yards, with a touchdown and two interceptions. Beathard also led the team in rushing, with 40 yards on six carries. The Eagles stout run defense held Carlos Hyde and Matt Breida to a combined 42 yards on 17 carries.

The final score looks bad, but for much of the first three quarters, the defense did strong work. The Eagles held a mere 3-0 lead until after the two minute warning in the second quarter. A touchdown followed by a pick-six turned this into a 17-0 game. Down 20-0, the 49ers managed a touchdown on a shovel pass to Matt Breida, but the defense officially began running out of gas on the next drive. It ended ugly, and the 49ers head home now to lick their wounds.

Up next

The 49ers are back home for the next month, and they open the home stand against the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals are coming off a bye week. They lost quarterback Carson Palmer to a broken arm, and Drew Stanton is taking over as the starter. His backup is Blaine Gabbert. This matchup of Stanton and Beathard should certainly be something to watch. Or not.

The 49ers are losing right tackles at an alarming rate.

The San Francisco 49ers are losing some notable players to injury. Shortly after losing Jimmie Ward to a forearm injury, the 49ers ruled right tackle Garry Gilliam out with a knee injury. Zane Beadles replaces him at right tackle.

Gilliam was in the game because Trent Brown is inactive due to a Week 7 concussion. Gilliam had been the swing tackle, but his move into the lineup meant Beadles was the swing tackle. Now that Gilliam is out and Beadles is in at right tackle, I have no idea who is the swing tackle. I can say that this likely means Erik Magnuson is now the 49ers primary interior reserve lineman.

The 49ers offensive line has been patch work, and going against a strong Eagles run defense and stout pass rush, this is not an ideal situation to be mixing and matching bad offensive linemen.

Rookie Adrian Colbert has come on in place of Ward.

The San Francisco 49ers have lost free safety Jimmie Ward for the rest of their Week 8 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. Ward suffered a forearm injury in the first quarter, and after initially being ruled questionable to return, has been downgraded to out in the second quarter.

Rookie Adrian Colbert replaced Ward in the secondary, and will finish out the game. The defense has gotten off to a solid start against the Eagles, holding them to a first quarter field goal. The Eagles will surely look to challenge Colbert in his new centerfield role.

Kyle Shanahan will meet with the media after the game, but we likely will not get a firm answer on Ward’s status until Monday. This hurts at free safety, but also hurts in slot coverage with K’Waun Williams missing today’s game as well.
