We have some quick film to look at from the defensive side of the ball from the 49ers’ win over the Texans on Sunday.

The San Francisco 49ers beat the Houston Texans in what was a pretty decent game. I won’t call it an “ugly” game, because the 49ers set the bar exceedingly low for “ugly” earlier in the season. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a good time overall.

As I’ve done a few times this year, I’m putting together a couple posts with some video that I captured during the game. As usual, I will do more thorough breakdowns with the coaches film later in the week, but for now, we’re going to dive right in. I’ve decided, this week, to separate things up by offense and defense.

And we’re going to start with the defense. There were some good plays, particularly from Adrian Colbert, who is earning his spot in the lineup going into the offseason. Are the 49ers going to go into the 2018 season without both Jimmie Ward and Eric Reid? Seems possible.

So we’re going to get to the videos below. These aren’t gifs, but videos embedded from Tweets I posted throughout the game (follow me, you know you want to), and thus occasionally have stuff at the beginning or end that is not the focus. I’m sure ya’ll will manage, though.

Witherspoon makes the stop

This is a very typical outside run that was probably good enough for a first down and a smart play overall by the Texans ... until Ahkello Witherspoon decided to close with superhuman speed to make this tackle, forcing the fourth down. Speaking of fourth down ...

Mitchell has been here before

I love that the 49ers have guys like Earl Mitchell and Elvis Dumervil. Ideally, no injuries would happen and the 49ers would be starting four young, promising defensive linemen, but that’s not how it works. And someone like Mitchell obviously has plenty of value, as illustrated with this excellent stop.

Maybe if T.J. Yates gets his ball out faster, the 49ers are in a very bad spot. But he doesn’t, and safety Adrian Colbert makes a huge play to get over there about as fast as Witherspoon ran on that third-down stop. He makes a great play on the ball to force an incompletion.

This sees like a pretty terrible interpretation of NFL rules, to me. This is a player making a very stupid mistake, not a player giving himself up and thus being ruled down by contact. It’s like those receivers who spike the ball before actually crossing into the end zone. The rule shouldn’t exist to bail out dumb mistakes.

The Texans got huge games from Jadeveon Clowney and DeAndre Hopkins, but the 49ers outlasted them for the big win!

The San Francisco 49ers suddenly find themselves with a two-game win streak! The 49ers beat the Houston Texans 26-16 to improve to 3-10. The 49ers might be out of the playoff chase, but this is their third win in four games. Not too shabby for a team that opened the season 0-9.

Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers got off to a slow start, with their first three drives ending with two punts and a Garoppolo interception. However, Garoppolo rebounded on the next three drives. The 49ers managed a field goal, and then added a Carlos Hyde. Following that, Hyde had a big run and Garoppolo made a couple big passes to set up a field goal to close out the first half. Garoppolo added his second touchdown with the 49ers, connecting with Garrett Celek in the third quarter.

Garoppolo threw for 334 yards, and has thrown for the most passing yards through his first two games as 49ers starter. It was notable in part because Garoppolo struggled early in the game. The QB-WR connection was not really there for much of the first quarter, but eventually they got things going. Seeing a solid rebound from a poor start is certainly another good thing to see from Garoppolo.

All of this came as Jadeveon Clowney was absolutely destroying Zane Beadles. The 49ers started Beadles because Trent Brown was inactive due to his shoulder injury. It was an atrocious mismatch, with Beadles unable to do anything to stop Clowney.

On the other side of the ball, the 49ers could do nothing to contain DeAndre Hopkins. He had 11 receptions for 149 yards and two touchdowns. I’m amazed the Texans did not throw to him more regularly given how much success he had.

Hopkins aside, the 49ers did some great work on defense. They shut down Lamar Miller, and nobody other than Hopkins was able to get much done. Adrian Colbert, Ahkello Witherspoon, and Eric Reid in particular all did some solid work in coverage. And, the 49ers managed three sacks and had pressure on T.J. Yates and Tom Savage much of the game, landing nine QB hits. A nice little day.

Up next: Tennessee Titans (8-4)

The 49ers are back home for the next two weeks, facing the Titans and then the Jacksonville Jaguars. Both teams are 8-4, playing this afternoon against the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks, respectively. The 49ers have won three of their last four games, but all three wins came against not so good football teams. The Titans are inconsistent, but eight wins is eight wins. This will be a solid challenge for the 49ers who are suddenly playing some pretty decent football.

These are some big moves for Sunday against the Texans.

Fooch’s update: Zane Beadles will start in place of Brown at right tackle.

The San Francisco 49ers and Houston Texans announced their Week 14 inactives, and the big news is no Trent Brown. The 49ers right tackle is inactive as his shoulder injury continues to bother him. He was inactive two weeks ago, but active last week. Darrell Williams and Zane Beadles are the two most likely candidates to start at right tackle.

Defensive end Aaron Lynch is active for the first time since Week 6. He has been a healthy scratch the last two weeks. He joins Tank Carradine as active defensive ends, with Leger Douzable, D.J. Jones, and Ronald Blair all inactive. This suggests the 49ers expect more from the Texans passing game on Sunday. My guess is Carradine and Solomon Thomas start at the two defensive end positions, but it will be interesting to see how the 49ers rotate in Lynch.

Here is the full rundown of inactives for Week 14.

49ers inactives: RB Jeremy McNichols, DB Antone Exum, Jr., LB Pita Taumoepenu, OL Trent Brown, DT Leger Douzable, DT D.J. Jones, DL Ronald Blair

Texans inactives: WR Braxton Miller, WR Cobi Hamilton, RB Alfred Blue, ILB Jelani Jenkins, OT Julién Davenport, OLB Ufomba Kamalu, NT Chunky Clements

The San Francisco 49ers are on the road facing the Houston Texans in Week 14. Find information here on the 49ers-Texans game time, TV channel, live online streaming options, radio, announcers and more!

Happy Jimmy Garoppolo Day, part 2! The San Francisco 49ers return to action on Sunday, traveling to face the Houston Texans in Week 14. The game gets going at 10:00 a.m. PT on FOX, and will have Dick Stockton and Mark Schlereth calling the game from the booth, and Shannon Spake on the sideline.

The 49ers got their second win of the season last week, beating the Chicago Bears 15-14 in Jimmy Garoppolo’s first start with the team. The offense could not get into the end zone, but Garoppolo set the franchise record for most passing yards (293) in his starting debut for the team. Coming off his strong two-minute drill performance against Seattle, optimism is certainly high heading into this game.

San Francisco faces a Texans squad that looked ready to take the world by storm six weeks ago. They were 3-4 and coming off a tough shootout loss to the Seattle Seahawks, but Deshaun Watson was looking like he would run away with offensive rookie of the year honors. However, he subsequently tore his ACL in practice, and things went south. Tom Savage replaced him and the Texans have gone 1-4 since then.

The 49ers only have one player on their injury report this week. Trent Brown was limited in practice all three days, and is listed as questionable. He is a game-time decision for the second straight week as he continues pushing through a shoulder injury.

Oddsmakers installed the 49ers as a field goal underdog, and after some movement down and then back up, the line sits at 49ers +2.5, according to Odds Shark. A home team gets between 2.5 and three points right off the bat, so this suggests a fairly even matchup on a neutral field. If Jimmy Garoppolo and the offense can build on last week, particularly in improving red zone penalties, this is a very winnable game.
