The 49ers will retain Lawrence Okoye on injured reserve for the rest of the season. We break down the implications of this decision. New to Niners Nation? Sign up here and join the discussion!

Each day, the NFL releases a log of transactions across the league, including waiver claims, player terminations and various other transactions. According to yesterday's transaction log, the 49ers reached an injury settlement with defensive tackle Lamar Divens. That effectively will make him a free agent. The team did NOT come to an injury settlement with defensive tackle Lawrence Okoye (tip of the cap to Matt Barrows for first noticing this).

This means that Okoye will spend the season on injured reserve. Had he reached an injury settlement, he would have been able to sign with the 49ers practice squad after the settlement time plus six weeks. Instead, his rights are retained by the 49ers for the next year.

Barrows pointed out what this means for Okoye's participation with the 49ers this season:

While he will not be able to practice with the 49ers this season, he can attend meetings, do classroom work, watch games from the sidelines and otherwise get an insider's education on how the NFL works -- exactly what a football neophyte requires.

Given that he cannot actually practice, he cannot really physically work on his technique with coaches. However, there will be plenty for him to learn throughout the season. Once the season ends, the injured reserve designation disappears and he can get back to physically working with coaches to implement the techniques he has learned throughout the year. Assuming the injury is not serious, this would mean he will be good to go in time for the offseason workout program, and back at when training camp rolls around next July.

We take a look at Lawrence Okoye's performance against the Minnesota Vikings, and what his immediate future holds as the 49ers approach their first roster cuts.

49ers rookie defensive lineman Lawrence Okoye may have played his last 2013 preseason game on Sunday. The British Olympian played eight snaps, and on his final snap he suffered a knee injury and had to leave the game. According to media reports, Okoye was seen on crutches at the facility today, although last night he apparently did not think the injury was serious.

According to the media, Okoye would not be able to play on Thursday. Although it does not necessarily mark the end of the road for Okoye, it's a potentially disappointing close to this preseason. He still has a lot to learn about football technique, but in his third game, he managed to get on the stat sheet with a quarterback pressure. It came on what looked like a busted screen play. The offensive lineman moved out of the way to go out and block, and Okoye came untouched at the quarterback.

Nonetheless it still gets him on the stat sheet! He also might actually get credit for an assisted tackle on one play in which a running back ran into another guy and Okoye ended up involved in the tackle. He still struggled at times with leverage, but he showed off some strength, and gave us more positives.

The 49ers have to cut down to 75 players by 1 pm PT on Tuesday, and with this injury, the 49ers might decide to include Okoye in those cuts. The team has several players they are likely still assessing, and every roster spot can help. Okoye could still end up on the practice squad if he goes unclaimed on waivers, which seems like a strong possibility.

The question then will be if the 49ers are convinced he is far enough along, and has the ceiling worth spending one of only eight practice squad spots. It will be interesting to see how they decide to proceed with Okoye.

We break down Lawrence Okoye's second game in the NFL. How did the former Olympian perform against the Chiefs, and what does it mean?

Last week, I put together a quick breakdown of the limited work Lawrence Okoye got in the 49ers preseason opener against the Denver Broncos. The 49ers British Olympian import got six snaps, and while he struggled with a lot of the basics, it provided a chance for him to get on the field for the first time outside of practice. He struggled with leverage issues, and generally got pushed around, but it was a big step in his development as a football player.

The 49ers faced the Chiefs last Friday, and the official NFL game book says Okoye got four snaps on defense. I only saw three of the snaps, but either way, there was not a lot to expect. He continues to have leverage issues, as can be expected from a 6-6 defensive lineman. On one of the plays he did seem to move forward, but the plays developed a little too quickly to see exactly what he was accomplishing.

Things get interesting this week and next week. While the 49ers are not a team to follow convention in terms of third game playing time, extended starter playing time would limit the chances to get Okoye on the field, even in the fourth quarter. The 49ers still have several players they need to check out, and given Okoye's likely roster status, he could get shuffled aside for this one.

The question facing the 49ers is whether or not Okoye makes it past the cut down to 75 players. I remain convinced that if he clears waivers, Lawrence Okoye will sign with the 49ers practice squad. However, given that the team has limited options in cutting down to 75, wouldn't it make sense to release Okoye next Tuesday, and then sign him to the practice squad the following Sunday when the team gets the eight-man squad together?

All of this is assuming he clears waivers, but given what we've seen so far, would we really see another team spend a roster spot on a guy who will not see the field this season? Anything is possible, but I would be pretty surprised to see that happen.

In looking at potential candidates for next Tuesday's deadline to 75 payers, it was not exactly simple figuring out those final few players. Do we slot in Okoye given the need to assess several other players?

We break down Lawrence Okoye's first game in the NFL. How did the former Olympian perform against the Broncos?

It is easy for all of us to get excited for that first preseason game of the season, but for Lawrence Okoye, this was one of the biggest moments of his life. The former Olympian discus thrower made his debut in live NFL action, stepping on the field at right defensive tackle, with a little under five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Given the unique nature of his development in the NFL, I am going to post something each week about his performance. We also have a story stream covering all Lawrence Okoye news and analysis.

In the days leading up to the game, Okoye met with reporters and discussed his development, and the process in place. That's also when he mentioned that some people called him Great Brit during the training process for the combine. My favorite line was how he felt the first step was developing into a "bad football player." When you are starting from nothing, you have to become bad at something and slowly learn the keys to become adequate, decent, good and then great. For most of us, we don't even think about the value of being "bad" at something. However, it is even applicable to a guy like rookie free safety Eric Reid. Donte Whitner pointed out how you learn from mistakes, and throwing a guy in the deep end can be a valuable experience.

I don't think Okoye quite got thrown into the deep end, but he did get a chance to show what he has learned this offseason. There wasn't a lot of "good" in what we saw, but getting him on the field was a big step forward.

Okoye got six snaps with the defense and one one special teams. The defense snaps were split evenly between the final two Broncos series of the game, and two of the six snaps were on kneel downs to close out the game. Three of the plays were runs, one was a pass and two were kneel downs.

On the first two run plays, the running back went away from Okoye. On the first play, Lance Ball went right between center and guard Jacob Hester was offset that side, but then cut over to block Okoye, and potentially open up a cutback. When Hester came at Okoye, it seemed like Okoye hesitated and sort of went to tackle him, as if he had the ball. There was a little bit of confusion, which is to be expected for a guy who has no experience upon which to base his instincts.

On the next play, the Broncos again ran Lance Ball toward the right side, and they had the left tackle and guard double-team Okoye, again opening up the cut-back lane. Here is a picture of Okoye getting double-teamed:

Okoye is at the top of the screen, getting easily double-teamed. One area he has to work on is improving his leverage. As a tall guy, it's easy to get stood up, rather than get down low. You could see that in his limited action last night.

The following play, the Broncos ran play action, and Zac Dysert rolled to his left. Okoye briefly bit on the play action, but quickly recovered to start moving back toward Dysert. Dan Skuta made the sack on the play, but it was probably the "best" moment of the night for Okoye.

It was only six defensive snaps, so we can only take so much from his performance. We could see the leverage issues, and the nose for the ball is not quite there yet. Neither is a surprise. I don't know if we'll see any kind of improvement next week against the Chiefs, but I really do hope he gets into all four preseason games. Even just a handful of snaps could potentially show us a little bit more about him each week.

As it currently stands, even with some improvement, he seems destined for the practice squad. The 49ers have to waive him and hope nobody claims him, but given what we saw last night, I would be surprised to see a team spend a spot on their 53-man roster on such a significant project. This puts Okoye in a position to stick with the 49ers and continue learning from DL coach Jim Tomsula, and the numerous veterans on the roster.

49ers defensive lineman Lawrence Okoye spoke with the media on Tuesday, and seems to recognize that he has a long way to go to become an NFL-caliber player.

When the San Francisco 49ers host the Denver Broncos Thursday evening, one player most of us will be keeping an eye on is defensive lineman Lawrence Okoye. As we all know, the British import has never played football, so everything he is doing, he is doing for the first time.

All indications are that he has shown improvement in practice, but as defensive coordinator Vic Fangio stated yesterday, it has to be taken in the context of having zero previous American football experience. Fangio wants to get Okoye into the game on Thursday, but it will depend on the number of defensive snaps available. It's safe to say that means Okoye is at the bottom of the defensive line depth chart.

Okoye recognizes that he has a lot of work to do, and acknowledged as much when he met briefly with the media Tuesday afternoon. Matt Barrows tweeted out some entertaining comments from Okoye:

"The first step was to get to a position where I can be looked upon as a really bad football player. And I think we're getting to that stage. I can say I'm a bad football player now. That's a good step for me. ... I'm pretty happy where I am at the moment."

You have to love that line about thinking he is getting to the stage of being a bad football player. He later made a good comparison to his move from rugby to throwing the discus.

"I was terrible. I was awful ... I wouldn't even call myself a discus thrower. I was a ... I don't know. I was really bad."

It would seem like Okoye completely understands this process, and where he is at. He may get some playing time on Thursday, but even if he doesn't, I have to think he recognizes this is all part of the development process.

The 49ers have their first day off after four days of training camp practice. We take a look at the developing story lines as the 49ers prepare for their first preseason game in a week and a half.

The San Francisco 49ers have their first day off from practice today, which also means no media availability. This seems as good a time as any to start taking a look at some of the story lines that have been developing over these last four days. Most are things we were expecting, but some bring a little something extra to the table. We'll be discussing this further this afternoon at 1:00 p.m. PT on the NN podcast.

More training camp recaps: Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4

The fact that it has only been four days of practice means we have to take many things with a grain of salt. However, we can start to make some inferences, and we can also figure out what to pay attention to in the coming week, as well as in the first preseason game.

Ian Williams showing us things at nose tackle

Based on what the coaching staff was saying over the course of the offseason, there was a general belief that Glenn Dorsey had the lead in the competition for the nose tackle role. Not so fast. Ian Williams has been taking the first team snaps, and all indications are that he is putting together an impressive display thus far. He has been getting penetration against the first team offensive line, and seems to be playing like a man who has been waiting two years for his opportunity.

Considering he has in fact been sitting and learning for the last two seasons, it is no surprise to see him burst out like this. He was considered a talented defensive lineman coming out of Notre Dame, but an injury scuttled his draft stock. Two years later, he seems to be performing like the guy who will get that starting nose tackle job.

Even if Williams claims the nose tackle job, Glenn Dorsey will still have a fairly significant role with this defense. I suspect (and I think many of you do as well) that we see him in the Ricky Jean Francois role, particularly with Cornellius Carradine and Quinton Dial both still recovering from their respective injuries.

Colin Kaepernick and his favorite receivers

Last season, Michael Crabtree quickly became Colin Kaepernick's favorite receiver, and a key cog of the 49ers passing offense. The wide receiver position was a question mark heading into training camp, but one of the bigger question marks was who if anyone would become Kap's go-to receiver.

Thus far, all indications are that Anquan Boldin and Vernon Davis have been getting the majority of the looks. This is not particularly surprising, but still good to hear. James will have more on Boldin later today, but for now, all indications are that he is looking incredibly sharp thus far. Boldin had a monster postseason last year, but was coming off a bit of an up and down regular season in which he had 65 catches for 921 yards and four touchdowns. That's not bad by any stretch, but his three regular seasons with Baltimore were a step back from his time in Arizona. Obviously he's getting older, but hopefully the 49ers get a little more of the postseason Anquan Boldin, as opposed to the regular season Anquan Boldin.

As for Vernon Davis? Yesterday, he met with the media and spoke about the process of learning with his new quarterback. Davis had a big postseason, but had a very pedestrian regular season as a receiving option. He remained a strong blocker, but we heard about his struggles to get on the same page with Kap. He mentioned yesterday how everybody was learning with Kap, and how they've had a full offseason now to work together. We'll see how it translates when the regular seasons starts.

Wide Receiver competition has all sorts of randomness

While Anquan Boldin and Vernon Davis are connecting with Colin Kaepernick, the wide receiver corps remains a question mark. We'll discuss injuries a bit more below, but suffice to say, the wide receiver corps is getting hit with an assortment of ailments. Kyle Williams sat out Sunday's practice after tweaking his hamstring, Ricardo Lockette may have injured his hip while completing Sunday's practice, and Marlon Moore may have "come up lame" in some form or fashion, while also completing practice.

In terms of performance, Moore appears to be standing out to some extent due to some highlight reel-type catches. In a week and a half, when the 49ers take the field against the Denver Broncos (yep, it's getting close!), it will be interesting to see when Moore makes his first appearance. It is entirely possible he will be a training camp champ that is not able to do much once the regular, but maybe the fourth year pro is finally finding his way? I know, we've heard that so many times.

I can't have a section on wide receivers without talking about A.J. Jenkins. The training camp reports seem to be pointing to a struggle with consistency for the young receiver. One report mentioned how he has an odd struggle with staying on his feet on plays. As the 49ers work toward their preseason opener next week, I have to think Jenkins will get a lot of work with the ones AND twos against the Broncos. While many of the veteran starters will only get a series or two, it seems to me like Jenkins needs to be in there for at least a half of play. Even though a sizable chunk of that would be with Colt McCoy, any work is valuable work at this point for the 49ers second year receiver.

Eric Reid working to earn his stripes

The 49ers traded up in the first round to draft Reid, and at some point he will be playing safety with the starting defense. For now, however, the team is continuing to slowly work him in. He has gotten some work against the 49ers first string offense, but he has not played in that designated No. 1 safety role quite yet. Craig Dahl and C.J. Spillman have gotten time at starting free safety, while it sounds like Reid has worked at both safety positions with the second team unit.

Reid will eventually be the starting free safety this year. It may take a couple weeks to get a firm grasp on it, but at some point, the 49ers are going to toss him into the fire. Vic Fangio made it clear that Reid had the mental aspect of things down, and has the athleticism to be a starter. However, for now he is still getting used to the speed of the game, and the reactions needed. The more experience he gets, the more the game will slow down for him.

Lawrence Okoye knows how to put on his pads

During yesterday's media availability, Jim Harbaugh and Aldon Smith were both asked about Lawrence Okoye. The former British Olympian is attempting to create a career for himself as an NFL defensive lineman, having never previously played a down of American football.

Both Harbaugh and Smith thought he did some good work in his first padded practice on Saturday. Coach Harbaugh mentioned that Okoye was able to get the pads on properly. This may seem ridiculous to many of us, but given that it was Okoye's first time completely padded up, it's kind of a big deal. It also shows how far he has to go to make it in the NFL.

Coach Harbaugh also spoke about how Okoye was a better player in pads with contact, than in shorts and a t-shirt. He mentioned how with his long arms, Okoye is now able to engage offensive linemen, and use his arms to get some leverage. Aldon Smith mentioned how Okoye has incredible strength, but will have to work at dropping his hips and sinking down. Okoye is a tall guy, and veteran offensive linemen can take advantage of that to take away any leverage. And considering every offensive linemen in the league (starting or on the bench) is a veteran of football compared to Okoye, that's plenty to learn.

Injury Report

Every team has to deal with injuries throughout training camp, and the 49ers are no different. We are not going to get many specifics from the coaching staff, but we have a few points of note from the beat writers on hand.

Darius Fleming: The 49ers inside linebacker went down with a knee injury during a special teams drill. He was reportedly working as a gunner when he tried to change direction and went down. The injury happened to the same knee on which Fleming underwent ACL surgery, and the beat writers thought it looked serious. Fleming missed last season with the torn ACL, so we'll see what follow-up reports bring.

Kyle Williams: The 49ers wide receiver reportedly tweaked his hamstring on a touchdown catch during Saturday's practice. Williams tweeted afterward that he was fine, but he was held out of practice on Sunday. With today's day off, it made sense to give him the back-to-back days off and get him back to 100%. Even if the hamstring was 95%, you don't want to risk it developing into a chronic injury.

Ricardo Lockette: Reports indicated he suffered a hip injury, but he also reportedly came back to finish up practice.

Quinton Patton: He has been wearing a blue non-contact jersey since the first day of practice, and over the weekend he was seen wearing a soft cast on his left hand. Coach Harbaugh described it as a jammed finger. It sounds like it happened on a reception in practice, but there aren't a lot of details on it at this point.

Kendall Hunter: The 49ers running back is on the PUP list, rehabbing his torn Achilles. He was reportedly running at camp yesterday, and showing plenty of speed. He will need to get cleared after performing cuts and various change of direction work, but he seems to be making good progress. If he continues on his current pace, I could see him activated in the next week or so.

Here is a rundown of the various training camp reports from each beat writer.

Jim Harbaugh met with the media as the 49ers prepare for their fourth day of training camp practice. We take a look at his comments about Tarell Brown, Lawrence Okoye and Marlon Moore.

The 49ers are back in practice a little later this afternoon, and they had head coach Jim Harbaugh speak with the media at lunch time. He had a chance to speak on a variety of topics, including the Tarell Brown contract situation, Lawrence Okoye's first padded practice and some of the wide receiver work.

Coach Harbaugh has six more media appearances between now and the end of preseason Week 2.

Tarell Brown situation

Coach Harbaugh was asked about Tarell Brown's contract situation, and he went into some interesting detail with his comments. He indicated he felt bad about the situation because as he put it, it was a "real torpedo" that came out of nowhere. Harbaugh stated that he was confident that if anybody knew about the offseason workout requirement, it would have been mentioned. He also stated that the thing to do now is find a solution. He did not know what that solution would be, but he did think that there was a solution to be had, and that it was a matter of everybody thinking on it.

There could very well be a solution, but for now we might also want to consider that Coach Harbaugh could be playing a little good cop in this situation. He's certainly not going to say the team is going to do nothing for Brown, but his desire to fix the situation financially does not mean that will actually happen. After all, Coach Harbaugh also said the team should re-sign Josh Morgan and Dashon Goldson.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall when Paraag Marathe and Trent Baalke have been discussing this situation. I suppose the need to appear might have been forgotten, but given how good this front office is, it's hard to think that nobody knew about the situation. This could be just as much good cop/bad cop as anything else at this point. We'll see in the coming days and weeks if anything gets done.

Lawrence Okoye gets into pads

Coach Harbaugh had a chance to discuss Lawrence Okoye as well. Okoye went through his first ever padded practice on Saturday, and per Matt Barrows yesterday, he was not terrible. Given that he had never put in a padded practice before yesterday, that strikes me as a good thing.

Coach Harbaugh elaborated a little bit, and my favorite line of his might have been when he said that Okoye got all the pads on properly. That gave Harbaugh a chance to take a trip down memory lane and talk about his own first experience wearing pads. It happened in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1973, with a pee wee football team called the Packers. Harbaugh indicated he had a bit of trouble with the thigh pads.

Harbaugh said that Okoye was actually a better player in pads than out of pads. Okoye has incredibly long arms, and in non-contact, non-padded work, he is not really able to use those arms to engage blockers. Now that the team is working in pads, he can use his arms to gain some leverage.

Wide Receivers

Coach Harbaugh was also asked about Marlon Moore's work thus far. Based on the practice reports, it sounds like Moore has made some highlight reel catches. Coach Harbaugh indicated that Moore had stood out due to his consistency. He said Moore was doing a good job learning the system, and has been able to play multiple wide receiver positions.

The wide receiver competition behind Anquan Boldin appears to be fairly wide open. With Crabtree and Manningham likely out for some time, there is one, if not two wide receiver spots open alongside Anquan Boldin, Kyle Williams, A.J. Jenkins and Quinton Patton. Moore, Ricardo Lockette and Chad Hall would seem to be among the early favorites.

With training camp just around the corner, 49ers rookie Lawrence Okoye visited his old school in South London. We've got some video from the visit.

The 49ers rookies will be reporting to training camp this Friday, and one player that will be part of that group is former British Olympian Lawrence Okoye. The newly minted NFL defensive lineman continues his quest to develop into an NFL-caliber defensive lineman.

While Okoye is getting ready to head to continue his journey as an NFL player, he spent some time back in England at one of his old schools. Okoye visited Whitgift School, which he attended at one point. The school educates children ages 10-18, but I'm not quite sure how much time he spent at Whitgift.

Whatever the case, he was back with J.B. Gill from an English band called JLS. They were visiting the school, and the video above comes courtesy of the Daily Mail, along with this article. It was included in yesterday's Golden Nuggets, but I wanted to pull it out separately so people could enjoy the video.

We get a chance to see him playing some rugby with the kids. It is obviously touch rugby given that he would send those kids into orbit if he hit them! We hear some comments from him about living in the US now as he prepares for football season. The article itself covers much of what we've discussed before, but the video is fun.

Okoye faces as tough a task as anybody on the 49ers roster heading into training camp. He already described the process as the hardest thing he's ever done. Training camp will be that much more difficult. Once things get physical, we'll really see where Okoye is at in his development. Jim Tomsula has told him to just focus on learning, so we'll see how far that focus has brought Okoye.
