The 49ers improved to 7-4 with a Monday Night Football win over Washington. We break down the 27-6 victory.

The San Francisco 49ers got a much-needed win on Monday Night Football, as they used a strong defensive effort and a second half offensive surge to put away Washington 27-6. The 49ers snapped a two-game losing streak with the win, and move back into the final wild card spot ahead of the Arizona Cardinals.

This game wasn't perfect, but we saw a lot of good things the team can build on. The biggest questions were about the offense, and the passing attack in particular. Colin Kaepernick finished the game 15 of 24 for 235 yards and three touchdowns. He had a first quarter touchdown to Anquan Boldin, but otherwise was a bit quiet in the first half. He seemed to be focusing in on one receiver content to throw into double coverage. The 49ers led 10-6 at the half, and

Once the second half hit however, Kap seemed to flip a switch. He threw a pair of touchdowns to Vernon Davis and Anquan Boldin in the third quarter, and was able to put together an efficient effort. Boldin had his best game since the season opener, finishing the game with 94 yards and two touchdowns. Davis had a solid effort with 70 yards and a touchdown. He had one drop and another touchdown he might have been able to snag, but otherwise it was a strong effort from the tight end.

The offense showed improvement against a fairly bad Washington defense, so I'm sure some will poo-poo the performance. I don't think the 49ers defensive effort can be looked over quite so easily. They had some stretches where Washington would gash them, but the defense stepped up as needed and took care of business. They harassed Robert Griffin III for much of the night, finishing with four sacks and seven hits. The Washington rushing attack had its moments, but the 49ers contained the league's leading rushing unit to 101 yards on 27 carries.

The player of the game in the defensive effort really just belonged to the entire linebacker unit. Patrick Willis, NaVorro Bowman, Aldon Smith and Ahmad Brooks all had big games, although I think Brooks might deserve a "player of the game" kudo, if I had to choose one. And Aldon? He had a pair of sacks and four QB hits as he is looking better and better. I suspect he'll continue getting more playing time as the 49ers head home.

Speaking of which, the 49ers now head home for huge divisional matchups against the Rams and Seahawks. The 49ers maintain their hold on the second wildcard spot, and will need to secure wins these next two weeks to build on that.

The 49ers travel to face Washington on Monday Night Football in Week 12. The 49ers are 4 1/2 point favorites looking to snap their two-game losing streak. We take a look at pertinent details related to the game, as well as provide an open thread for discussion of the first quarter. New to Niners Nation? Sign up here and join the discussion!

The San Francisco 49ers are in Washington for Monday Night Football on the back-end of their last two-game road trip. The 49ers head into the game at 6-4, having lost two straight games. Washington is 3-7, having lost two straight as well, and struggling to find any semblance of consistency.

The 49ers are 4 1/2 point favorites. They are the better team, but at times they have not played like they should be better than a team like Washington. The 49ers defense is playing well, and the ground game can get going, but the passing game continues to give us all headaches. Will they finally get it together tonight? I certainly hope so.

This will be your first quarter game thread, and we'll be back with a new thread each quarter. We'll wrap things up with a recap thread.

The 49ers and Washington released their inactives for Week 12 Monday Night Football. We break down all the notable names. New to Niners Nation? Sign up here and join the discussion!

The San Francisco 49ers and Washington football team released their inactives for Monday Night Football, and there are no surprises. Mike Iupati, Tarell Brown, Ray McDonald and Garrett Celek are the most notable names on the list. Iupati and Brown were ruled out heading on Friday, while McDonald and Celek were both listed as questionable. Vic Fangio said McDonald had shown improvement over the course of the week, but he said he was still iffy.

Tarell Brown is dealing with a rib injury, and there are some indications Brown will miss next week against the Rams, and potentially be back in time for the Seahawks in Week 14. There are no guarantees, but that's the word that's out there.

With Michael Crabtree remaining on the PUP list for one more day, the 49ers will roll out Anquan Boldin, Mario Manningham, Jon Baldwin and Kassim Osgood. We'll see how much playing time Osgood and Baldwin see. I imagine they'll both get some playing time, with Baldwin likely to get more of it.

The 49ers prepare for some seriously cold weather. This could very well mark Eric Reid's first truly cold weather game. How will that play out?

The San Francisco 49ers face Washington on tonight on Monday Night Football, and it's gonna be a cold one. The weather is expected to be right around freezing at 32 degrees. I'm going to be in attendance at the game, layered up like nobody's business. I'll actually be up in the press box, so I'm hoping it is relatively warm in there. I've got some finger-less mittens just in case.

This will be the 49ers first truly cold-weather game since their last two road games of 2012 at New England and Seattle. I was at the New England game and got to sit in rain gear amidst just above freezing rain. That was a good time!

This game would actually seem to mark the first ever truly cold weather game for rookie free safety Eric Reid. He spent three seasons at LSU, and went to high school in Louisiana. It can get chilly there, but nothing like the cold weather of the mid-Atlantic region and north.

Reid sent out this tweet Sunday morning:

It's so cold

— Eric Reid (@E_Reid35) November 24, 2013

Yes, Eric, it is oh so cold. I was outside Sunday and it was getting into the high 20s. It is a little bit warmer today, although I suppose it might be more accurate to say "less cold" than "warmer" at this point. I don't expect it to be a problem for a guy like Reid, but the weather issue does fascinate me for a guy who has played in nothing all that worse than chilly (or rainy) conditions in his career.

The 49ers-Washington Week 12 matchup will be officiated by John Parry's crew. We break down the crew, and the assignments for each member. New to Niners Nation? Sign up here and join the discussion!

The 49ers and Washington get things going at 5:30 p.m. on Monday night, and the lead official for the game will be John Parry. The folks at Football Zebras and Football-Refs do a great job compiling the various referee assignments each week. Given the importance of this game, as well as the somewhat heated rivalry, and the physicality with which both teams play, I think it is useful to have at least a little bit of knowledge about the officiating crew.

Parry has been a referee since the 2007 season, and served as a side judge before that dating back to 2000. Among his more notable appearances, he was a side judge for Super Bowl XLI between the Bears and Colts, and was the referee for Super Bowl XLVI between the Patriots and the Giants.

He has been on the officiating crew for 13 49ers games in his career, with five as a side judge and seven as referee. He was the lead official for the 49ers Sunday Night Football loss to the Seahawks. Last season, he was the referee for 49ers-Giants and 49ers-Saints.

The full crew for Monday Night Football will likely be:

Referee: John Parry #132
Umpire: Dan Ferrell #64
Head Linesman: Derick Bowers #74
Line Judge: Adrian Hill #29
Field Judge: Scott Edwards #3
Side Judge: Joe Larrew #73
Back Judge: Perry Paganelli #46

The NFL rulebook provides useful definitions for each of the officials. I thought I would break the various job descriptions for each of the members of John Parry's crew.

Umpire

Primary jurisdiction over the equipment and conduct/actions of players on the scrimmage line.

The umpire is to assist the Referee on decisions involving possession of the ball in close proximity to the line, after a loose ball or runner has crossed it. The Umpire and the Line Judge are to determine whether ineligible linemen illegally cross the line prior to a pass, and the Umpire must wipe a wet ball in accordance with the proper timing. The Umpire should count the offensive players on the field at the snap.

Linesman:

The Linesman operates on the visitor’s side of field designated by the Referee during the first half and on opposite side during the second half unless ordered otherwise.

He is responsible for illegal motion, offside, encroaching, and any actions pertaining to scrimmage line prior to or at snap; and for covering in his side zone.

The Linesman is to mark with his foot (when up with ball) the yard line touched by forward point of ball at end of each scrimmage down. At the start of each new series of downs, he and the rodmen set the yardage chains when the Referee so signals. He positively must check with the Referee as to the number of each down that is about to start.

On his own side, he is to assist the Line Judge as to illegal motion or a shift and umpire in regard to holding or illegal use of hands on end of line (especially during kicks or passes), and know eligible pass receivers.

He is to mark out-of-bounds spot on his side of field when within his range and is to supervise substitutions made by team located on his side of field during either half.

Line Judge

The Line Judge is to operate on side of field opposite the Linesman.

He is responsible for the timing of game. He also is responsible for illegal motion, illegal shift, and for covering in his side zone.

On his own side, he is to: (a) assist the Linesman as to offside or encroaching; (b) assist the Umpire as to holding or illegal use of hands on the end of the line (especially during kicks or passes); (c) assist the Referee as to whether a pass is forward or backward behind the line and false starts; and (d) be responsible for knowing the eligible pass receivers. (e) mark the out-of-bounds spot of all plays on his side, when within his range; (f) supervise substitutions made by the team seated on his side of the field during either half; (g) notify the home team head coach with the Field Judge five minutes before the start of the second half.

Field Judge

The Field Judge will operate on the same side of the field as Line Judge, 20 yards deep.

FJ shall count the number of defensive players on the field at the snap.

FJ shall be responsible for all eligible receivers on his side of the field. After receivers have cleared line of scrimmage, FJ will concentrate on action in the area between the Umpire and Back Judge.

In addition to the specified use of the whistle by all officials, FJ is also to use his whistle when upon his positive knowledge he knows: (a) that ball is dead; (b) that time is out; (c) that time is out at the end of a down, during which a foul was signaled by a marker, no whistle has sounded in such cases; and (d) that even in the presence of a whistle up or down field, FJ is to sound his whistle when players are some distance from such signal. This will help prevent dead ball fouls.

FJ will assist Referee in decisions involving any catching, recovery, out of bounds spot, or illegal touching, of a loose ball, after it has crossed scrimmage line and particularly so for such actions that are out of the range of the Line Judge and Umpire.

Side Judge

The Side Judge will operate on the same side of the field as the Head Linesman, 20 yards deep.

SJ shall count the number of defensive players on the field at the snap.

He shall be responsible for all eligible receivers on his side of the field. After receivers have cleared line of scrimmage, Sj will concentrate on action in the area between the Umpire and Back Judge.

In addition to the specified use of the whistle by all officials, SJ is also to use his whistle when upon his positive knowledge he knows: (a) that ball is dead; (b) that time is out; (c) that time is out at the end of a down, during which a foul was signaled by a marker, no whistle has sounded in such cases; and (d) that even in the presence of a whistle up or down field, he is to sound his whistle when players are some distance from such signal. This will help prevent dead ball fouls.

SJ will assist Referee in decisions involving any catching, recovery, out of bounds spot, or illegal touching, of a loose ball, after it has crossed scrimmage line and particularly so for such actions that are out of the range of the Head Linesman and Umpire.

Back Judge

The Back Judge is primarily responsible in regard to covering kicks from scrimmage (unless a Try-kick) or forward passes crossing the defensive goal line and all such loose balls, out of the range of Umpire, Field Judge, and Linesman, noting an illegal substitution or withdrawal during dead ball with time in, and a foul signaled by a flag or cap during down. He will count defensive team.

He is to time the intermission between the two periods of each half, the length of all team timeouts, and the 40/25 seconds permitted Team A to put ball in play. He is to utilize the 40/25 second clock provided by the home team. If this clock is inoperative he should take over the official timing of the 40/25 seconds on the field.

In addition to the specified use of the whistle by all officials, the Back Judge is also to use his whistle, when upon his own positive knowledge he knows: (a) that ball is dead; (b) time is out; or (c) is out at end of down, during which a foul was signaled by a flag or cap, and no whistle has sounded in such cases. Even in the presence of a whistle upfield, he is to sound his when downfield players are some distance away from such signal, and in order to prevent dead ball fouls. He should be particularly alert for item (c).

He shall assist the Referee in decisions involving any catching, recovery, out- of-bounds spot, or illegal touching, of a loose ball, after it has crossed scrimmage line and particularly so for such actions as are out of the range of the Field Judge, Linesman, and Umpire. He should count the defensive players on the field at the snap.

The Back Judge has the absolute responsibility: (a) to instruct kicker and/or placekicker that "kickoff" must be made by placekick or dropkick. (b) that the height of the tee (artificial or natural) used for the kickoff conforms to the governing rules.
